Built between 1847-1852, the building was once home to the Louisiana legislature and served as an important centre of government until 1932 when it was replaced by what we now know as The New State Capitol. Today, visitors can take guided tours through its halls to learn about its fascinating past or even participate in special events like ghost walks. Inside, you’ll find numerous artifacts from its political days like original furnishings; documents from Andrew Jackson’s presidential term; and items from Louisiana’s military conflicts such as the Civil War.

What makes the Old State Capitol so special are its multiple restoration projects that have helped bring new life into the building over time. From 1936-1938, renowned architect Richard Koch donated his services to help create better access for visitors with disabilities; insert new modern lighting fixtures; re-roof certain areas; replace worn window frames; and restore much of the plasterwork. Further renovations were completed in 1992 which saw extensive repairs made to both interior and exterior elements including ceiling frescos, wood panelling, and floors—all while preserving historical accuracy.

The building itself houses several unique features worth noting including two grand staircases leading up to a central gallery area which was used for debate meetings during legislative sessions; a restored courtroom and office where prominent citizens signed legislation into law; two reflecting pools located at either side of a large stone portico which serves as an entrance way; and a bronze statue honouring former Governor Huey P Long.

Not only is there plenty to explore inside Louisiana’s Old State Capitol but also outside too! The grounds feature lush gardens where people can relax amid blooming magnolias or admire vibrant azaleas year-round – perfect for picnics or simply taking in nature’s beauty. Whether you’re exploring solo or with family members, a visit here promises unforgettable experiences filled with dignity and allure – truly making it one of Baton Rouge’s most treasured sites!
